Knossos is the most visited and most important archaeological site in Heraklion. It is the heart of the Minoan civilization since according to tradition it was the main palace of the famous King Minos and the birthplace of the legendary Minoan stories such as the myth of the Labyrinth with the Minotaur and the thrilling story of Daidalos and Ikaros.
Although the palace was destroyed in 1700 BC it was rebuilt and more buildings were added. The destruction of the Palace began in 1600 BC due to a strong earthquake and was completely destroyed by the Achaen invasion. Nowadays guests can visit not only the Minoan complex Palace but also the ancient private villas with the vivid wall-paintings.
